It is almost 9 o'clock at night, and we have had a full day. Up early in Winnemucca, to cross the desert. Unusual in that it was in BLOOM ! We had a wet winter, and the grasses and wildflowers are still green. The cattle looked well fed and in good health. Lots to eat this year.
Open pit mines to wonder about, as we passed. Seeing some of the small towns, it makes us wonder what it would be like to live in one. We did live in Holbrook, AZ for a year. That was an experience. Small town politics, but truly memorable people with whom we still keep in touch.
The scenery and views were lovely, sweeping panoramas with doe toned mountains. Some with unusual shapes, and outcroppings of ancient lava flows. We arrived at our RV park mid afternoon, and unhooked for a tourist trip to Shoshone Falls.
The Falls were spectacular. A green mowed park bordered the road, as we drove down through time, to the falls. The walls of the gorge speak of many lava flows down the ages. The Snake River has cut down nearly 1000 ft of rock, to arrive at its present level. The Falls must have been amazing before they built the Dam. But, it was a wet winter, and a lot of water is pouring over the lava rocks. Idaho has built a lovely park, with walk ways that overhang the distant water below. We saw some kayakers under where we stood, paddling their kayaks under some of the small rivulets coming off the rocks.
We returned to Twin Falls, and enjoyed a dinner out at Idaho Joe's. The AAA book recommended the restaurant, and also the Indian Tacos with homemade chili. They make their own frybread, which was, too good! I have not had Indian Frybread like that since we lived in Holbrook. They used to sell it at the county fair in the summer time. After a few errands, including Barnes and Noble ( one MUST read ) we returned to our caravan we call home away from home, with breathtaking views of an Idaho sunset. There was a harvest moon, huge and orange, and rose colored clouds. A fitting close for a wonderful day.
Tomorrow, we travel north through Pocatello ( Russ' old stamping grounds), Idaho Falls, heading for Dillon, Montana. Another day, another adventure.
