Antarctica is not burning

Russ Steele

Cold_south_ed
We have heard a lot about our world is burning, but I guess the Antarctic did not get the memo. While the main stream press and local bloggers have focused on the lowest ice extent for the Arctic since satellite monitoring began in 1979, the Antarctica has set a new record for the extent of ice expansion since 1979. The Southern Hemisphere had a rough year in 2007, setting temperature records in Australia, South America and Africa.  World Climate Report has a detailed discussion here or Antarctic warming, er cooling.

If you google
antarctica site:realclimate.org
(the climatologists' blog) you'll find that the Antarctic Peninsula is warming rapidly, but the (rest of the?) continent isn't. You can get the details from reading the articles there, e.g. this one ("the recent cooling is quite well understood and not expected to continue over the long term").

Russ, our house is burning.
