According to a report prepared by Pike Research, Boulder Colorado, California will see a surge of plug in electric vehicles in metropolitan areas, including the Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville region. The Sac Bee has the story here:
Pike's latest report also said that in-state utilities such as Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and Southern California Edison need to prepare for the arrival of PEVs in much larger numbers than their counterparts nationwide.
The range of plug in vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf or Ford Focus Electric, is about 100 miles under ideal conditions, however those ideal condition are rare here in the foothills. Hills take more energy than flat land driving. Even more rare are the charging station that those vehicles will require for a return trip to the valley, should a PEV own like to come for a visit to Nevada City or Grass Valley.
Nevada City is 60 miles from Sacramento and 44 miles from Roseville. The typical range of the PEV’s is 80 miles, 40 miles out and 40 miles back to the charging station, unless if course there is a charging station at the mid-point.
It takes 4 hours to fully charge a PEV at 240 volts, and 12 hours at 120 volts. According to the Department of Energy Alternative Fuel & Advance Vehicle Data Center the only Nevada County electric vehicle charging station is in Truckee. Nearby stations include Colfax and Auburn. According to the same data base there no planned stations listed for Grass Valley and Nevada City.
PEV vehicle owner have to think like pilots when planning a flying trip. Where will he land and refuel. PEV owners when planning a trip need to know how far they can drive and where can recharge their vehicles. The Department of Energy is providing the needed planning tools, but Nevada City and Grass Valley are not listed in the data base, even though there is a charging station at the Miner Foundry and one planned for the Holliday Inn Express in Grass Valley.
Exit Question: What are Nevada City and Grass Valley doing to prepare for the surge in plug in electrical vehicles in the region? Oh?
