We have been in our house for a little over 25 years, and the garage roof was beginning to grow moss. At the Home and Garden Show we stopped by the Rinkydink Builders booth and asked for some advice. They suggested spraying the roof with a mixture water and bleach, mixed three to one. Once cup of bleach to three cups of water. While up on the roof, I noted that one section of the roof did not have any of the moss, directly below a sky light with some galvanized flashing.
Rinkydink also offered to inspect our roof and tell us when we might need to have a new roof put on. The good news is the roof is good for a few more years. Even better news, the Rinkydink Builders inspector recommended adding a zinc strip to the roof crown. Rain will cause small amounts of zinc to run down the roof and preventing the moss from growing. This is why the area below the skylight did not have any moss, it was getting small amounts of zinc in the rain water running over the flashing. A little chemical action is all that's needed to prevent the moss from growing.
We have ordered the zinc strip for the crown of the garage roof. No more spraying and sweeping dead moss off the roof. Thanks Rinkydink!
