Over the past eight days China and India have been suffering through deep cold and unusually deep snow storms. The result of La Nina weather patterns according to the experts. Here is view of that cold up to 2 February 2008.
Cold is again building in western Canada and will come east and south the next few weeks.
UPDATE: Second coldest January in 15 years, Anthony Watts at Watt's Up With That has the details.
UPDATE #2: Accuweather's West Coast Blog has more details on more potent storms in Washington and Oregon. See below.
Homes in Oregon are already collapsing from the weight of 7 feet of wet snow. In the winter of 1954/55 we had to shovel six feet of show from the roof of my grandmothers house, which was about 2 miles up the Banner Lava Cap ridge. It came in three storms over three nights. It was a mess. We were without power for over a week. The winter of 1954/55 were El Nina years, not unlike the one we are having now. It was between Solar Cycle 18 and 19, with low sunspot activity. Not unlike what we are observing now between Solar Cycle 23 and 24.
Here is a typical winter La Nina cold phase weather pattern, graphic by NOAA.
Note the wet and cold shown in Washington and Oregon, Some times the pattern slips farther south into Northern California. The news reports from these locations here and here indicate the reality of these La Nina weather patterns. So, are we next? Will the wet cold pattern slip south again?
