The media has lapped up AB32 advocates’ attempt to characterize the Suspend AB32 initiative as a creation of evil Texas oil companies. You would think that those darn Texans are worse than the guys from the Middle East. No doubt the people who bring us reasonably priced energy to drive our economy have an interest in keeping the price of energy within reach. But a little journalistic investigation (remember when that was part of the profession) would find millions pouring in from environmental and special interests positioned to profit from taxpayers’ pain from AB32, if it goes into effect. All you need to do is check the Election Track site http://www.electiontrack.com/.
If you did, you would have found more than a half million dollars had funneled in during a typical week. Consider the lobbyist group Green Tech Action Fund, good for a cool half million on March 31. While those Texans may be committing the sin of creating value for customers and shareholders, the Green Tech Action Fund, the Environmental Defense fund, the NRDC, and the like are lined up at the public trough. Perhaps they have something at stake besides idealistic concern for the environment. One is reminded of the line ascribed to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, “As long as you have a trough, there will be no shortage of swine.”
