A report released Friday by the California Food Policy Advocates, estimates that Fresno County ranks first in CalFresh participation among certain eligible individuals and that Mono County ranks last. Nevada County ranks 48th out of 58 counties in CalFresh utilization.
CalFresh (formerly the Food Stamp Program) is a critical defense against poor nutrition. According to the report the program is severely underutilized: half of all eligible Californians miss out on the benefits of CalFresh.
If all income-eligible individuals in Nevada County participated in CalFresh, the report estimates that county residents would receive an estimated $9,620,000 in additional federal nutrition benefits each year.
